Searching Thistletop or: I eat another pickle

The adventurers find themselves in a dingy throne room full of furs and slain goblins. Arnye is collecting all the pelts she can take with her. The group decides to sweep the building and loot what they can.

Heading north they find themselves in Ripnugget’s personal chambers. Arnye jumps on his bed til it breaks. Melange finds a medallion of Lamashtu hidden under a pillow and a key hidden under a chair. The rest of the room has nothing of note, but a collection of horseshoes nailed to the walls. Over 100 in total.

The group heads south and finds a room with boards nailed over the doors. Fedor is able to remove the boards rather quickly and the room is found to be a storeroom. Notably, a large barrel of pickles is in this room. Talitha quickly eats three and stuffs her bag full of them. She likes pickles.

The party makes their way up a stairway to the watchtower and finds two goblins . They are hastily throwing a bag of pickles over the edge of the tower whispering to eachother to hurry or they’ll be caught red handed. As they dispose of their ill-gotten pickle hoard, the party makes quick work of them and sends their corpses over the edge of the tower with their pickles.

The party next moves north and finds themselves in a courtyard. The courtyard holds an outbuilding with two dead goblins outside of it as well as four goblin dogs. Talitha quickly throws a pickle and manages to distract one of the dogs. The party goes to work slaying the goblin dogs. When the dogs are dead, Fedor goes to work on unboarding the boards upon boards nailing the outbuilding shut. Inside they find another dead Goblin and a emaciated war horse. Melange, using her druid magics, speaks with the horse to find that his name is Shadowmist.

He was a part of a caravan that was attacked by the goblins. The other horse and the guards were slain, while the merchants were able to escape towards Sandpoint. After feeding the horse pickles and water and anything else that looked good they had, Shadowmist agreed to join the party as an adventurer’s mount rather than be a wild horse.

The party welcomed him and told him to stay and rest as they cleared the rest of the structure. The party then found a room with tools, riding gear, and a cage full of rabbits. The party let the rabbits free in the courtyard and Talitha took one as a pet. She strapped it to her chest a la a baby bjorn and was very happy.

The adventurers continued north and found what was clearly a bathroom. Yurt took a closer look and saw that it was indeed a very dirty bathroom, but Melange noticed a hidden door at the back of the room and swung it open to find a large sea chest. Fedor deftly disarmed the trapped knife in the lid and opened the chest revealing all of the thistletop goblins spoils. The chest contained an unorganized pile of 7432 cp, 2490 sp, a large number of gp, and a sizable amount of pp. It also contained a leather pouch of 34 badly flawed malachites worth 1 gp each, a Medium chain shirt, a Medium masterwork scimitar, a pair of masterwork manacles, a gold holy symbol of Sarenrae worth 100 gp, a jade necklace worth 60 gp, and a fine blue silk gown with silver trim worth 150 gp.

The party made their way back out of the room with their spoils and saw a stairway leading down…

Attack on Sandpoint or: You Missed....Again

In the wake of the on-going goblin attack, the town of Sandpoint, is in bedlam. Fightened citizens are running for safety. A brave few try to hold their own against the merciless attackers. The adventurers head to the northern gates, heeding Sheriff Hemlock’s request, and encounter a grizzly scene. As the adventurers arrive an armored goblin riding a mangy canine, whose face has the same flat nose, beady eyes, and protruding teeth as a rat grown grotesquely large, and three goblins on foot have a man and his dog cornered. The man hides behind some boxes as the dog stands growling and ready to protect his master. As the mounted goblin raises his sword to attack the dog, Talitha says half-halfheartedly where only the party hears, “No….wait…don’t do that…” but fails to perform any action to interrupt the scene. The goblin lowers his sword and slashes the dog down.

The adventurer’s quickly sneak up behind the preoccupied goblins and begin the fight. The fight drags on and on. There is miss after miss after miss by the heroes. The day drinking in the inn seems to have caught up to them as they attempt to defend the town. Eventually all four goblins and the goblin dog lay slain. The cowering man comes out of hiding and introduces himself as Aldern Foxglove. The party can tell he is noble born by the way he talks and carries himself. He thank them profusely for saving his life and seems to direct his attention to Talitha. He invites her and the rest of the party to join him at the Rusty Dargon, where he is staying so that he might “properly” thank them.

After this long festival day and the bloody attack on the city the group heads back to Arnye’s house to rest, nurse their wounds, and maybe have a drink or two more.

The Swallowtail Festival or: It's Five O'Clock Somewhere

After the opening ceremonies of the festival, the adventurers look to see what activities aregoing on. After reading through a poster listing The Sandpoint Devil Hunt, the Goblin Toss, The Lighthouse Smash, Dragon Races, Tug of War, and other games the group decide to try their hand at the last entry on the list: a handwritten addendum stating “Drinking Contest at the Hagfish.” The group promptly makes their way to the Hagfish and easily finds a table at this early hour.

As they sit down, the tank of Norah, the tavern’s namesake, catch their eye. Next to the tank pinned to the wall is a bag bursting with silver coins. Melange Nauru makes her way to the bar to ask about it with Talitha Nauru and Vesper following. Jargie Quinn, the owner of the tavern, explains that anyone who can drink a glass of water from Norah’s tank and keep it down wins the money. He points to a list of 23 names carved into the wall. He explains, “they’re the only ones who’ve ever been able to do it.”

Melange promptly offers her silver piece to try and grabbed a glass. She tips the mug back into her mouth, but finds the slimy, foul-tasting water more than she can stomach and spits it back into the glass. Vesper and Talitha, seeing Melange struggle, both slam down their silver pieces and give it a go. Both of them take a glass and down it effortlessly. Jargie gives a delightful laugh as he pulls down the bag of coins and hands it to Vesper and asks their names to carve into the wall. Having bested the challenge, they decide to join back with Fedor D’Azmodan and Arnye Bismuth at their table and have some real drinks.

The group challenges a nearby table to a drinking contest and set their order. The first team to drain their mugs of ale will be the winner. The adventurers proceed to down their drinks one after another. Arnye, Talitha, Vesper, Fedor, and finally Melange slam down their mugs and are victorious.

das-boot-o.gif

The victors challenge the local barflies to another round. The team beats them again. The losers buy the party another round and they drink together throughout the afternoon. As evening comes, Jargie closes the bar so he and his patrons can attend the evening’s ceremonies.

Father Zantus sets off a Thunderstone blast to hush the crowd and gain their attention. He clears his throat, takes a breath to speak, and suddenly a woman’s scream slices through the air. A few moments later, another scream rises, then another. Beyond them, a sudden surge of strange new voices rises—high-pitched, tittering shrieks that sound not quite human. The crowd parts and something low to the ground races by, giggling with disturbing glee as a stray dog near the party gives a pained yelp and then collapses with a gurgle, its throat cut open from ear to ear. The party sees that goblins are attacking and spring to action.

The goblin that killed the dog is joined by two other goblins by a nearby wagon. One of the goblins makes his way up on top of the wagon as Fedor pulls out his crossbow. He lets loose a bolt and hits the goblin squarely between the eyes and it falls lifelessly backwards off the wagon. Melange shoots a lightning arc wide of her mark. Talitha’s arrow fails to connect as well. Vesper swings at the goblin who slayed the dog yelling “This is for the dog!” and strikes it down fiercely. Talitha lets fly another arrow which critically failed to hit its mark. It ends up striking Vesper in the back. Arnye stikes down the remaining goblin with her Dragon-bane longsword.

As soon as they dispatch the goblins, they see an explosion nearby. When they get closer to investigate they find three more goblins with torches and a goblin warchanter. The goblins try to burn the party with their torches but fail to connect. The warchanter tries to trip Arnye unsuccessfully. Fedor lets loose a bolt from his crossbow and strikes the warchanter. Melange finishes her off with a lightning arc. Talitha hits one of the goblins with a Magic Missile and kills it. Fedor shoots another goblin in the arm. Arnye decapitates the other remaining goblin with a mighty strike. Melange pulls out a dagger and ruthlessly slits the throat of the last goblin.

Father Zantus runs to the party and quickly offers them his thanks and heals those who need it. The party hears cries of help from the north. They run up to find Belor helping citizens at the White Deer Inn. He exclaims, “secure the northern gate!”

The Swallowtail Festival Speeches or: Yada-Yada-Yada Have A Good Time

It is the day of the Swallowtail Festival. The adventurers make their way to the town square with the rest of the town’s citizens for the opening speeches. Several merchants have set up tents to vend their wares of food, clothes, local crafts, souvenirs, and beverages. Others folk have arrived early to gain positions near the podiums and the tables beyond.

Mayor Deverin takes the stage first. “Good morning everyone. I see everyone’s arrived. Even Larz Rovanky has left off tanning hides to be here. I’m sure his workers are glad it’s not their hides getting tanned, at least not today."

“”It’s wonderful to see so many of you here to join us on this proud day, and I’d like to extend my welcome to the many new faces I see in the crowd. As Mayor, I’d like to extend welcome to you on behalf of the town. I hope you all are enjoying your stay here in Sandpoint and I sincerely hope that you’re having a wonderful time. Our town has much to offer and I hope we can consider you as new friends. Spend some time in Sandpoint and you’ll grow to love it like we do. And even if you don’t stay long, spend your money while you’re here!”

“And to all of the old faces I see, thank you for coming and thank you for everything that each of you has done to keep this town strong. Thank you especially for all the time, sweat, and love you’ve put into building this fine cathedral. Sandpoint didn’t seem complete without a church. We’ve always had heart. The true heart of Sandpoint is you, her people. But now we have an expression of that heart, and we built it ourselves!”

“Anyway, I can smell the lunch our tavern keepers are cooking already. A round of applause to Ameiko, Garridan, Cracktooth, and Jargie! I’m sure Father Zantus can spare an extra prayer that they don’t burn anything before we get to eat it. Now, since you have three more of us to stand there through, I’m going to sit down. Today as mayor I am declaring a town order to have fun! This is my favorite time of year!”

“Without further ado, let me welcome our dutiful Sheriff, Belor Hemlock to the stage!”
She indicates a dark-skinned, bulky man, clearly of Shoanti descent, wearing his armor and armed with a prestigous looking sword. Sheriff Hemlock nods and steps forward onto the stage.

“Thank you, Mayor. First off, let us have a moment of silence.”
He bows his head and begins speaking, “Let us remember the memories of those friends and family members who lost their lives in the tragic blaze that made our new cathedral necessary. Cherish those memories and may the blessings of our Gods see them happy and well in the Afterlife.”

He raises his head and stands in silence for a moment scanning the crowd.

“Over the next three days all instances of wrong-doing will be dealt with swiftly and to the fullest extent of the law. No exceptions. As the sheriff of Sandpoint, I, Belor Hemlock, would also like to welcome everyone to enjoy themselves today, and you may or may not be aware of the planned bonfire at the beach tonight… it looks to be a promising festival. Do trust that I will be monitoring the level of safe conduct late into the evening. I am trusting our fun will lean to the side of caution. If you are a militia member, remember where your duties lay, and help Sandpoint keep the peace. Thank you.” With that the sheriff steps back awkwardly and becons with his hand, for the next speaker to approach.

The next speaker is quite a contrast to the Sheriff; he is brightly dressed, sports a well-groomed goatee, and seems to be thoroughly enjoying the day. As he reaches the center stage he loosens his collar a bit, winks into the crowd and starts to talk:
“Well, thank you Sheriff for that uplifting oratory. Don’t worry I doubt there will be any fun for you to stress over today. If things get out of hand you can ask Ameiko take the stage and put as all to sleep with one of her stories.” The crowd responds with a combination of chuckles and offended heckles.

Without a beat Ameiko shouts from her merchant tent “What about the story of your last flop at the theater? I’m almost done with my newest ballad, I call it Cyrdak the Unimpressive! Who wants to hear?”
The crowd responds with laughter and cheers.

After the noise finally quiets Cyrdak continues with a forced smile as if nothing happened, "We can all agree, this is our time to celebrate! I know this town has been through some hard times, but we don’t lay down easily. Look at what we’ve accomplished! [He motions towards the church.] And I’m telling you, they spared no expense with this place. Father Zantus’ chamber pot? It’s solid gold and comes with a singing choir standing nearby. It’s no doubt our neighbors and nobles put a pretty copper into the construction of this joint. And to think they wanted nothing in return, but to enlighten us and our taxes for many lifetimes to come. But worry not about your coinpurse, I’ve heard from father himself that the gods are getting their gold together to help pay for this place. But don’t take it from me, let me hand the stage off to the man who knows in charge here. But before I let him get things going I’d like to take this opportunity to extend my personal invitation to each and every one of you to the new production of “The Harpy’s Curse” starring the world-famous Magnimarian diva Allishanda as Avisera the harpy queen! It’s all premiering tomorrow evening and continuing throughout the next two weeks at the Theater. Come see it, it will be fabulous! And now join me in a bit of applause for his holiness himself, Father Zantus!"

The crowd cheers as Cyrdak motions Zantus to the center stage. The young priest looks noticeably abashed at the reception set up for him. He wears the traditional ceremonial robes of a priest of Desna and a shiny silver holy symbol about his neck. He smiles and tries to calm the crowd down, eventually speaking when the applause has subsided:

“Ahem, thank you. Thank you Cyrdak. And thank all of you for coming to join us on this most Holy day. Today ushers in the new Fall season. A season I have always thought was named appropriately, as today was the day Desna fell from the heavens during battle with Lamashtu. Though all the world wept for the loss of the goddess, and of dreams, it is said that she survived. She was discovered, on the rocks of a beach, by a blind orphan, forgotten and cast aside by the rest of the world. Though the orphan didn’t know who she was and could do little for the wounded goddess, she still stayed by her side, holding a vigil on the beach, tending to her as best she could and praying to her god, Desna. When other followers had abandoned Desna, the orphan empathized and held hope in her faith. Through the care of this orphan Desna recovered and revealed herself to the blind woman. In return Desna transformed her into an angel and offered the girl ascension to Desna’s palace in the heavens. It is now there and forever that they shall remain.”

Father Zantus motions toward the newly finished cathedral, the sunlight glittering off the stained glass windows. “This story reminds us that tragedy is just a setback, not an end. Though our place of worship was destroyed, and our previous priest, Father Tobyn, perished in the flame, we have preserved as Desna would desire, and built anew. Today is our day of new beginnings. Our day of ascension. Friends of Sandpoint, I declare the Swallowtail Festival officially underway!"

An acolyte throws off the canvas of a nearby wagon, revealing thousands of swallowtail butterflies…the Children of Desna. He opens the cages and the crowd begins to applaud as butterflies flutter in every direction through the crowd, and eager children begin chasing them.

Back to Town or: Did-a-chick? Dum-a-chum?

As the party recovered and collected their loot after allowing Black Fang to flee, they heard noises coming from behind a pile of rubble. After clearing away the debris they found a human tied up in a small room. The adventurers hesitantly untied the human. She introduced herself as Vesper, a human fighter who had been captured after her party was defeated and slain by Black Fang. She was the sole survivor of her party and was able to strike a deal to exchange information for her life. The party gathered her gear from a nearby chest and gave it back to Vesper and invited her to join their company.

The group of five headed out of the den, through the crypt, and back down the cliff face. They found themselves in the goblin throne room, where all of the goblins appeared to be napping. They moved quietly through the room towards an unexplored chamber.

In the new chamber they found a large pool surrounding an island containing a shiny pile of gear. Melange Nauru made her way into the pool swimming towards the island. Talitha Nauru and Vesper followed suit. When Melange reached the island she was met by a grotesque crab-like creature, a reefclaw. Talitha made her way to land and shot the reefclaw with an arrow. The reefclaw grabbed Melange in its claws and held her tightly. She was finally able to let loose a lightning arc though, and effectively cooked the reefclaw with a critical blast. Vesper made her way to the island as they started to split the island’s treasure. They found a [[:535811|Dragon-bane Longsword + 1], a potion of invisibility, a potion of levitation, and a sack of gold coins.

The group swam back across the island, while Melange decided to have a taste of the charred reefclaw. The bite was not very appetising. As Melange swam back to join the party, a cramp sent her underwater. A worried Talitha dove in and dragged her back to shore. Fedor D’Azmodan reminded Melange “you’re supposed to wait 30 minutes after you eat.” The group carried on exploring the cave but soon realized they made a large loop by ending up back in the room with the spider webs. Seeing nothing else to do here, they headed back to Sandpoint to collect their reward.

The group was on their way back to town when they were ambushed by five goblins. Melange and a goblin traded misses to start the battle. Vesper turned towards two of the goblins and struck with her double sided sword. She sliced through the first wiith a critical blow and killed it. She spun and fatally struck the other with the other end. The speed and lethality of Vesper’s strike startled one of the remaining goblins. Fedor let loose a wild bolt from his crossbow that stuck in a tree down the road. Melange struck her goblin in the head with her quarterstaff. Arnye Bismuth swung her new Dragon-bane sword, but had trouble making a connection due to her unfamiliarity with the blade. Vesper attempted a backflip but fell prone. She made a desperate move with her sword and managed to cut out the legs from Melange’s goblin and kill it. One of the remaining goblin charged at Fedor and missed a strike with his sword. Fedor lowered the crossbow to the goblin and shot it squarely in the head, killing it. Arnye, having adjusted for the weight, struck fiercely at the remaining goblin and decapitated it with a brutal strike to the neck. With all of the goblins slain, they searched the bodies for loot. Seeing none or value, Arnye decided to cut an ear off of one of the goblins and save it as a trophy.

They made their way back to Sandpoint and to Kenda Deverin’s office. She thanked them for their service and gave them the promised gold pieces. She also invited the party to the coming Swallowtail Festival in honor of the consecration of the new cathedral. As the party made their way out of the office, Melange attempted to pocket the mayor’s stapler and was met by a stern hand on the stapler. “I believe you have my stapler,” the mayor said dryly. Melange let go and they left.

The adventurers made their way to the Rusty Dragon, a local adventurers’ inn. There they had a couple of ales and chatted with a strange old man who was drinking alone going over his research. They try to engage him in conversation, but get little from him. He gets frustrated easily as they talk with him and often ranted about how no one believes him and why can’t he live in a place that has “intellectual peers.” After exhausting the conversation, Melange tries to steal some of his papers to see what his research is about, however, the man quickly grabs his paper and shuffles them out of sight. The party leaves knowing little more than they did before.

Before calling it a night, they make their way to the Fatman’s Feedbag. They get a drink in the smoke filled tavern notorious for its bar fights and shady dealings. After only ten minutes of being there the two men at the table next to them erupt into a fight after one throws his mug of ale at the other’s face. Vesper quickly starts taking bets from the other patrons in the bar. Arnye places her bet for one of the men. Almost as quickly as it started, the other man knocks out the man Arnye backed. Shortly after, as Vesper is dispersing winning bets, Sheriff Hemlock barges into the bar with another town guard. He takes both of the men in the fight into custody and shakes his head disapprovingly at Vesper and the party. The party decided to call it a night and heads to rest at Arnye’s house in Sandpoint.

Black Fang's Dungeon or: If You Love Something, Set It Free

The team of adventures are met by three human skeletons shuffling towards them. The rogue, Fedor D’Azmodan, gets the first strike and moves forward to try to stab one of them with his dagger. The fighter, Arnye Bismuth, knowing that the best way to break through bones is with her warhammer, strikes out at a skeleton and reduces it to powder. The druid, Melange Nauru, strikes at another skeleton with her lightning arc and defeats it. The sorcerer, Talitha Nauru, dispatches the remaining skeleton with her heavenly fire. The party peeks around the corner and hears the sounds of a dragon and takes a moment to heal before proceeding.

They make their way into Black Fang’s chamber where they see a pile of loot, the beginnings of the young dragon’s hoard. Fedor leads the attack and strikes at the stomach of the dragon to no avail. Melange fires a lightning arc at the dragon while Talitha shoots at it with her bow. Black Fang lets loose a massive blast of acid breath at Fedor and wounds him badly. While Fedor retreats out of the room, Arnye casts a net over the dragon and limits its mobility. The party takes turns shooting, blasting, and striking the dragon as it struggles to free itself. Black Fang eventually lets loose a wail and pleads with the adventurers to let him leave. He vows to leave the area and abandon his small hoard. The adventurers are suspicious of his claims, but due to his youth, they feel his statements are true. Reluctantly, Arnye releases Black Fang and he flies out the top of the cave, and heads north over the gulf. The party wonders whether they have released a threat that will return for vengeance or if perhaps they’re a step closer to having a dragon friend. The party heals and collects their bounty. Lots of gold, half-plate armor, a +1 Light Shield, a potion of Bull’s Strength, a scroll of New Life, and a scroll of Fireball.

The Adventure Begins or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Kick Everything

Livestock has started to disappear from farms near the small seaside town of Sandpoint. Sometimes a half-eaten corpse is found, sometimes only bloodstains. A long black fang was found in one of the animal corpses, prompting the locals to dub the unseen killer “Black Fang.” The mayor Kendra Deverin has offered a reward of 1,000 gold pieces to the group that stops this mysterious creature.

Answering the call for help from the mayor, four adventurer’s stand outside the cave of Black Fang. The dwarven fighter Arnye Bismuth, the human rogue Fedor D’Azmodan, the half-elf druid Melange Nauru, and her half sister, the elven sorcerer Talitha Nauru meet at the mouth of the cave in front of a statue of a warrior worn down from time.

The adventurers are quickly seized upon by a pair of goblin warriors guarding the cave. They charge with their crude swords and are met by the sword of Arnye. The adventures quickly dispatch their attackers and take the rocks and a dead lizard off of the goblins as trophies. They make their way into the cave and find the goblin’s outpost. After searching through their bed, Melange finds a key to a nearby treasure chest. She swiftly kicks the chest then opens it. Inside they find a freshly broken vial of orange liquid coating the rest of the contents which include a masterwork dagger, a small ruby, and a pouch of coins.

As the party makes their way deeper into the cave they come across a glowing fountain. Melange takes a drink impulsively and feels rather impervious as a result of the sweet water. Talitha drinks as well, but finds the water bitter and debilitating. Fedor tastes the water and he too finds it to be sweet and refreshing. Arnye doesn’t feel the gamble is worth it and watches her new cohorts.

They make their way into the next chamber, where they are met by four goblins and their leader King Fatmouth. They diplomatically speak with the king and he implores them to find his lost toy that was stolen by his sister. His lack of knowledge about where she may have gone wears thin on Melange’s patience. She proceeds to kick at the goblin and sparks an encounter. After exchanging a few blows, Melange casts an obscuring mist making it impossible for anyone to see more than a few feet in front of them. The party takes this opportunity to retreat back to the room with the fountain and regroup. They choose to go through another stone door in the room to wait out the mist.

As the step foot in the next room, a booming voice says “Enter with humility and live.” They see an alter with a large ruby flanked by two statues. Feeling taunted by the voice, Melange steps forward, throws her arms out and yells “Judge me!” Fedor uses his roguish reflexes and grabs the back of her armor and pulls her back as he notices the room is trapped. He makes his way to one of the statues and tries to disarm the trap. His attempt fails and he accidentally sets the trap off, filling the room with cones of fire. Deterred by this, Talitha ducks out of the room as Melange decides to grab the ruby. The trap ignites again as she makes her move and burns Fedor and Melange a second time. The ruby burns hot in Melange’s hand, but she now possesses the Energy Heart.

The team quickly exits the room and makes it way into a room full of spider webs. Here they see the body of a goblin wrapped in the web. Talitha’s search of the body finds a toy dragon, a Wand of Magic Missile, and some gold pieces. They are quickly met by a large spider who descends from its web to attack. Talitha uses the new wand on the spider as well as a viper she summoned. The spider is finished by a hammer to the back of the head from Arnye. The group heads back to the goblins to try to return the toy and restore the peace.

They are met by an excited King Fatmouth who thanks them for the return of his toy. They are given some of his treasures as a reward. Feeling the risk outweighed the reward, Talitha uses her intimidating presence to coax the king into giving over the rest of his bounty. They receive a substantial amount of gold, a wand of Cure Light Wounds, a Ring of Protection + 1, and some pearls.

The king points them towards a large cliff and says Black Fang lives up there. He advises them to aim for the belly of the beast as its scales are still soft there. The group climbs up the cliff face and finds themselves in a crypt. A shuffling sound seems to be approaching them from the darkness ahead.
